The Squall I'm passionate about is the Squall of Final Fantasy VIII, but I feel Leon should also get a mention on this website! He doesn't have a huge role in Kingdom Hearts, but I'm always pleased to see him. When I played Kingdom Hearts for the first time, I was so excited when the 'Leon' we were looking for in Traverse Town turned out to be Squall!

Fun fact: in the first Kingdom Hearts game, Leon is voiced by David Boreanaz, who also played Angel in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. If you haven't watched Buffy, I can assure you that this is extremely funny.

My biggest question about Leon is this: where did his scar come from?? Leon and Seifer still have matching facial scars in the Kingdom Hearts universe, but Leon is in his mid-twenties and Seifer is probably in his mid-teens. Did they still have a gunblade fight in this universe? Squall carving Seifer's face open feels very different if Seifer is ten years younger than him!

Here are a few possible explanations for Leon and Seifer's matching scars in the Kingdom Hearts universe, all varying degrees of stupidity.

Explanation one: it's just a coincidence. Leon got his scar fighting Heartless, probably. Seifer got his scar in an embarrassing skateboard accident.

Explanation two: when Squall and Seifer got their scars in the Final Fantasy VIII universe, their counterparts in the Kingdom Hearts universe spontaneously manifested scars. The Kingdom Hearts versions have no idea where their scars came from.

Explanation three: Leon and Seifer inflicted scars on each other when they were around the same age. However, Leon somehow got flung back in time at some point, meaning he ended up ageing out of step with the rest of the Final Fantasy VIII characters, which is the reason Leon is the only adult Final Fantasy VIII character in Kingdom Hearts and all the rest (Selphie, Seifer, Raijin, Fujin) are children.

Explanation four: Leon just cut a kid's head open, I guess???

I demand a new Kingdom Hearts game to explain how Leon and Seifer got their scars. We already have a game to explain why Mickey Mouse is shirtless at the end of the first Kingdom Hearts; surely this isn't too much of a stretch?

As a final note: in the first Kingdom Hearts game, if you beat Leon during the Traverse Town fight, he'll give Sora an elixir later. But apparently he can't bring himself to do it directly; he has to ask Aerith to act as a go-between! Aerith says, 'This is from Leon,' and gives Sora the elixir, and Leon closes his eyes and turns his head away awkwardly, because he gets embarrassed about performing normal human interactions like giving someone a present. I love him. (I also love that he's so worried about the missing dalmatian puppies.)
