Because my writing is tiny and can be difficult to read, I've included transcripts under each image. Just click the 'panel transcript' box to expand it.
Panel 1: floaty floaty floaty
Panel 2: fithos lusec wecos vinosec
Panel 3: eyes
Panel 4: sea, beach
Panel 5: I'll be here...
Why?
I'll be 'waiting' here...
('waiting'?)
(So... is he waiting or isn't he? Hmmm?)
Around Panel 5: da da dadada DA da da dadada da da da da da DA da da da DA da da da da da ooh the music ish spiffeh ^^
Yeah, this is about the level of artistic ability you can expect here. I drew the first page on lined paper, but the rest of the comic was done in an unlined sketchpad, so the lines won't be around for long. I'll be honest: their absence will not materially improve this comic.
Panel 1: FLOWERS! (totally a field of flowers)
Panel 2: totally a flower petal
Panel 3: *GASP* THE FLOWER PETAL'S GOOONE oh wait no this chick's just holding it. ^^;
STILL A FLOWER FIELD
Panel 5: OH WOW now it's a FEATHER! (yay!)
I don't keep unnecessarily labelling everything for long, if that helps! I'll also calm down a little and stop overenthusiastically captioning every moment.
I'm a little surprised that I call Rinoa a chick here! I'm not typically in the habit of calling my fellow women 'chicks'.
Next to Panel 1: AWWW.
fly, feather, fly!
Panel 2: feather feather feather feather
Panel 3: gunblade gunblade gunblade GUNBLADE
I was still trying to work out how to draw the characters at this point. I'll have abandoned this particular style within a few panels.
Panel 1: SCHTTMM
Panel 2: evil evil evil
Panel 3: grr (Squall doesn't work in this style.)
Panel 4: SQUARESOFT PRESENTS
Panel 6: FINAL FANTASY
Panel 8: VIII
Next to Panel 8: I clearly cannot draw Squall. As he's the main character and all, this does not bode well.
This is the point at which I abandon my original style for drawing characters; you can see how differently Squall is drawn in panel 7 versus panel 3. Is he drawn any better? Er. He's drawn differently, at least.
For the avoidance of any doubt: although this page says 'SQUARESOFT PRESENTS' on it, this comic is not an official Squaresoft production.
Panel 1: c'mon, Seifer, this is meant to be a fight scene. Stop looking like a statuette.
Around Panel 2: why can't the major characters be easy to draw?
Their colour schemes are completely reversed. I never noticed it before.
We've made it onto page two! The paper has changed from lined to unlined; the pen has also changed, from black to blue. I ended up switching pens a lot while drawing this comic, so I apologise if that's disconcerting.
At this point I've settled on the character drawing style I'm going to be sticking with for the rest of this comic: eyes, eyebrows, no other facial features (unless any character happens to have, say, a whacking great facial scar or tattoo). Who needs noses or mouths anyway?
The poses are not going to become any less stiff or awkward. Believe it or not, I was trying extra hard on these pages because they're the opening of the game.
Panel 1: INSERT FIGHT SCENE HERE (clang) (grr)
Panel 2: SYMBOLIC HANDS
Panel 3: FIREBALL WHEE (!! not good)
Under Panel 3: from silly to melodramatic in three seconds flat:
Okay, maybe I wasn't trying that extra hard.
I am extremely lazy when it comes to drawing. This will be a recurring theme in this comic.
Panel 4: eyes-in-darkness totally symbolic and not me messing up at all
Below Panel 4: FINAL FANTASY VIII
I like that, in the first panel here, you can clearly see that Seifer only has that dramatic dark background because I've been scribbling out previous efforts to draw Seifer.
